According to a statement posted on the university’s social media pages, Hampton Smith, a former Albany State baseball and football coach, passed away at the age of 89. Smith oversaw the football program at Albany State from 1971–1976 and 1982–1999, and is perhaps the best coach in the sport’s history.

In 1934 on October 1st, Smith was born. He played football for the Delta Devils from 1953 to 1956 while attending Mississippi Vocational College, now known as Mississippi Valley State University. In 1959, after receiving his master’s degree from Tennessee State University, he began working as a coaching assistant at Mississippi Vocational.

In 1971, he started working as a coach at Albany State. In 1972, the Rams had back-to-back winning campaigns (7-2-1, 4-1-1 in conference).

The Rams won nine SIAC titles during his 17-year second tenure as head coach, including a three-peat from 1984 to 1986 and a five-peat from 1993 to 1997. His teams reached the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals in 1997 and the NCAA Division II Playoffs five times between 1993 and 1997.
