The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Central Region has recently faced a challenge due to galamsey activities along the River Pra, leading to a 30% reduction in production at the Sekyerehemang Headworks.

This decision, while impacting some communities in the region, is being managed by supplementing water supply from the Bremsu Headworks.

Eric Seth Atiapah, the Chief Manager of the water distribution company, emphasized the importance of addressing galamsey issues along the riverbanks.

He highlighted the impact of these activities on water quality, mentioning that the high turbidity levels have necessitated the use of expensive chemicals for treatment.

This has prompted a decrease in production to ensure proper treatment of the compromised water.

Atiapah also stressed the need for community awareness on the detrimental effects of galamsey activities on water sources. By engaging with local communities and supporting government efforts to combat illegal mining, GWL aims to safeguard water quality and sustain production levels for the benefit of all stakeholders.
