Gregory Allen Howard was an American screenwriter and producer. Gregory Allen Howard died in Miami, Florida on January 27, 2023, at the age of 70 after a brief illness, according to his publicist.

Gregory Allen Howard was born in 1952 in Norfolk, Virginia, but his family moved frequently due to his stepfather’s Navy career.

After graduating from Princeton University with a degree in American history, Howard briefly worked on Wall Street at Merrill Lynch before moving to Los Angeles in his mid-twenties to pursue a writing career.

Gregory Allen Howard is best known for penning the screenplay for the Disney film Remember the Titans (2000), about an undefeated high school football team credited with bridging the racial divide in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971.

Later, he was credited with story writing for Michael Mann’s Ali, a 2001 biopic of sports legend Muhammad Ali. Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, and Jon Voight starred in the film, which was nominated for two Academy Awards.

In 2019, Howard brought to life a story he was deeply invested in, Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet, for which he wrote the screenplay and produced. The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards.

Howard was working on a number of projects, including The Magician, a biopic about quarterback Marlin “The Magician” Briscoe before his death.
