Gregg Charles Popovich is an American professional basketball coach and executive who serves as the president and head coach of the National Basketball Association’s San Antonio Spurs (NBA).

Popovich, who took over as coach of the Spurs in 1996, is the longest-tenured current coach in the NBA and all major sports leagues in the United States. He is frequently referred to as “Coach Pop” or simply “Pop.” He is the most successful coach in NBA history and is largely recognized as one of the best coaches in NBA history.

In his first 22 full seasons as head coach, he led the Spurs to a winning record, breaking Phil Jackson’s record for the most consecutive winning seasons in NBA history. The Spurs have enjoyed a winning record during his tenure.

Popovich has led the Spurs to five NBA championships, making him one of only five coaches in NBA history to do so. He was also the head coach of the United States national team at the Summer Olympics in 2020.

Popovich’s future in San Antonio was recently debated on ESPN’s “Jalen & Jacoby,” and the pair predict the NBA’s longest-tenured coach with one franchise will retire after the 2021-22 season.

Popovich has coached three teams in his career. He was the assistant coach of the Golden State Warriors from 1992-to 1994. He then became the president and head coach of the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association in 1996. A position he currently holds. Popovich is also the head coach of the United States national basketball team.

With 1,336 victories, Gregg Popovich became the NBA’s all-time winningest head coach. With the San Antonio Spurs’ 104-102 victory over the visiting Utah Jazz on Friday night, Popovich surpassed Don Nelson, who previously held the record for most regular-season wins.
