A senior writer for Sports Illustrated and a correspondent for Fox Sports, Wahl was born on December 8, 1974 and died on December 10, 2022 at age 48.
What happened to Grant Wahl?
Wahl collapsed suddenly in the press box at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Doha on December 9, 2022, while covering the 2022 World Cup Quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands.
Local paramedics responded to him quickly and he was transferred to a local hospital where he died on the early hours of Saturday, Dec. 10.
While the circumstances of Wahl’s death are not clear, Wahl had complained of chest discomfort and sought medical help, believing he had bronchitis.

Five days before his death, Wahl wrote:

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you.
“What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.
“I didn’t have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis.
“They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.”
Prior to his death, Grant stirred controversy and clashed with the Qatari authorities after he was arrested for wearing a rainbow shirt, an indication of his support for LGBTQ rights – a culture which is heavily frowned upon by Qatar.
He was also reported to have been investigating migrant labor mistreatment in Qatar.
After learning of the news of his death, Eric Wahl, Grant’s brother said he believed Grant Wahl was murdered.
