Grant Dawson was born in Cambria, Wisconsin, but his early years were marked by a move to Stromsburg, Nebraska, where he spent a significant part of his childhood.

Dawson’s journey in sports began with football, but it was his venture into wrestling that would ultimately shape his destiny.

Recognizing that wrestling could complement his skills in football, he took up the sport to aid his primary passion.

He was homeschooled until his teenage years, a period during which he dedicated himself to both his academic studies and wrestling training.

As a high school student at Cross County Community School, Dawson’s prowess in the sport of wrestling began to shine.

He competed in high school wrestling, culminating his senior season with an impressive record of 40–8. After graduating from high school, Dawson faced a crossroads.

Rather than pursuing a traditional college education, Dawson made a bold choice choosing to forego college due to his dyslexia and decided to embark on a career in mixed martial arts.

Dawson began his professional MMA career in 2014 after earning an amateur record of 8-1. Dawson made his UFC debut against Julian Erosa on March 9, 2019, at UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. dos Santos.
