Golriz Ghahraman, a distinguished New Zealand Member of Parliament, renowned author, and accomplished politician, has been a trailblazer in many aspects of her life.

While she has made significant strides in her political career and education, one aspect she has chosen not to explore is parenthood.
Golriz Ghahraman does not have any children, allowing her to channel her energy and passion into her professional pursuits. Born and raised in Iran, she later became a child asylum seeker and eventually carved her path as the first refugee to be elected to the New Zealand Parliament in 2017.
Ghahraman’s educational journey laid a strong foundation for her future endeavors. She attended Auckland Girls’ Grammar School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Auckland.

Her pursuit of knowledge continued with a Master of Studies (MSt) degree in International Human Rights Law with Distinction from the University of Oxford.
Entering legal practice in New Zealand, Ghahraman worked as a junior barrister specializing in criminal defense. Her work in this area was marked by a commitment to frontline human rights, where she applied the Bill of Rights Act daily, dealing with issues such as unlawful detention, searches, and discrimination.
Golriz Ghahraman’s unique background as a former United Nations lawyer and child asylum seeker contributes to her distinctive perspective in the New Zealand House of Representatives. As a member of the Green Party, she continues to champion human rights, justice, and environmental causes.
