The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has alerted the public to the heightened risk of fire outbreaks during the rainy season, particularly due to electrical issues.

DO1 Alex King Nartey, representing the GNFS Public Relations Department, emphasized that contrary to common assumptions, fire incidents, especially those linked to electrical faults, can occur during rainy weather.

Nartey advised individuals to take precautions by switching off electrical appliances during heavy rainfall, as power fluctuations caused by the weather can trigger fires.

“We advise the Ghanaian public to remain vigilant. When it rains, switch off your gadgets since power fluctuations can cause fires. Despite common beliefs, we do record fire outbreaks, especially electrical fires, when it rains,” he cautioned.

He further cautioned against seeking shelter under trees, billboards, or electric poles during heavy downpours, warning of the potential risks associated with falling objects and electrocution.

“Electrical poles can be pulled down, and if there is power in the wires and they come into contact with water, electrocution can occur. It is crucial to find safe spots and wait until the rains stop,” Nartey advised.

He also urged drivers to avoid parking under trees or in low-lying areas to prevent damage to vehicles from floodwaters.

These safety reminders were shared during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem program.
