Edna Matta and Cosme da Silva were the parents of Brazilian journalist, Gloria Maria. According to sources, Maria’s father, Cosme da Silva, was a tailor, while her mother, Edna was a housewife who took care of their home. Maria grew up in a very low-income family in Rio de Janeiro.

What happened to Gloria Maria’s parents?
Gloria Maria’s parents got divorced when she was still very young, therefore, she lived with her grandmother. She was told many stories by he grandparents about blacks in Brazil, including her great-grandfather who was hanged in the mountains of Minas Gerais state. Her grandmother was also a daughter of a slave who eventually benefited from the 1871 Law of Free Birth, making her birth for free.
Maria once revealed that her grandmother inspired her gravely to become who she was and stand up for the black community. Therefore, she battled several obstacles as the only black woman on television during the start of her career.
