Gilles Villeneuve, a Canadian race car driver died in a tragic accident during the qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix on May 8, 1982. The accident took place at the Zolder Circuit in Belgium.

Villeneuve was driving for the Ferrari team at the time. During his qualifying lap, he was attempting to set a quick time. As he approached a corner known as the “Villeneuve chicane,” Villeneuve’s Ferrari collided with the rear of Jochen Mass’ car, which was travelling at a slower speed. The impact caused Villeneuve’s car to become airborne and somersault several times before landing heavily.

The crash was severe, and Villeneuve was ejected from the car. He was then thrown into a catch-fencing barrier. Despite immediate medical attention and efforts to save him, Gilles Villeneuve succumbed to his injuries later that day at the hospital.
