From 1960 through 1988, Brandt headed the Cowboys’ player personnel department. After earning his degree from the University of Wisconsin, Brandt began his career in scouting by taking up a part-time job with the Los Angeles Rams. Before moving to Dallas to take a position as the Cowboys’ chief talent scout at the team’s creation in 1960, Brandt received his first full-time opportunity with the San Francisco 49ers in 1958.

Brandt, who was born on March 4th, 1933, in Milwaukee, attended the University of Wisconsin and worked as a baby photographer before beginning his career in the NFL as a part-time scout for the Los Angeles Rams in the 1950s, when Schramm was the team’s general manager.
