Gerry Ryan, a former Brighton & Hove Albion striker, passed away at age 68. Ryan joined the team in 1978 from Derby County and made 199 appearances while contributing 39 goals to the team’s success.

Ryan also made 19 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team, sharing the pitch with former Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan, and West Ham United midfielder Liam Brady, who referred to Ryan as a “influential figure.”

In Lindfield, West Sussex, Ryan and his wife Simeon purchased and operated The Witch Inn after Ryan’s retirement from the professional game. For The Witch in the Lewes Sunday League, he frequently participated. After having a stroke, Ryan was checked into a hospital on August 18, 2007.

After stints at Derby and Bohemians, Ryan assisted Brighton in being promoted to the top flight in 1979. After being forced to retire due to a broken leg in 1985, the Irishman bought a tavern and hung up his boots. He co-owned it with his wife Simeon until he had a stroke in 2007.
