Gerry McNamara is a  6’0″ (183 cm) tall former basketball player from the United States who is now an assistant coach for the Syracuse University men’s basketball team.

Gerry McNamara attended Syracuse University and won the school’s first National Championship in his first year.

In 2005, he briefly represented the United States in an international competition, winning a Gold Medal at the Summer Universiade. McNamara was the first overall pick in the 2006 NBA draft, but he did not sign and went undrafted.

He returned to Syracuse to work as a graduate assistant for the Orange. He was promoted to full-time assistant in 2011-12. McNamara is primarily a recruiter and works with Syracuse’s guards.

Syracuse has made the NCAA Tournament in eight of his 11 seasons as an assistant coach, including trips to the Final Four in 2013 and 2016. He was a member of the team that led the Orange into the Sweet in 2018.

McNamara has worked with NBA players including Michael Carter-Williams (Orlando), Tyler Ennis (LA Lakers), and Dion Waiters (LA Lakers). Tyus Battle, Michael Gbinije, and John Gillon are among his protégés who have competed in the NBA G-League.
