George Burns was born Nathan Birnbaum on January 20, 1896, in New York City, USA. He was the son of Eliezer “Louis” Birnbaum (1855-1903), a coat presser who also served as a substitute cantor at a local synagogue in New York City, and Hadassah “Dorah” Bluth (1857-1927), a homemaker.

Eliezer “Louis” Birnbaum was also known as Louis or Lippa, Jewish immigrants who had come to the United States from Ropczyce, Galicia, now Poland. During the influenza epidemic of 1903, Lippe Birnbaum contracted the flu and died at the age of 47.

George Burns was an American comedian, actor, writer, and singer whose career successfully spanned vaudeville, radio, film, and television. He is also known for his arched eyebrow and cigar-smoke punctuation.
