‘General Hospital’ & ‘Gomer Pyle: USMC’ Actor Elizabeth MacRae Dies at 88

Actress Elizabeth MacRae, renowned for her roles in “General Hospital” and “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” passed away at the age of 88.

MacRae, who died on May 27, 2024, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, had a notable career spanning over 25 years in television, film, and theater.

Originally from Fayetteville, MacRae began her acting journey after auditioning for Otto Preminger’s production of “Saint Joan” in 1956.

While she didn’t land a role, she persisted, eventually moving to New York City to study with Uta Hagen at the Herbert Berghof Studio and appearing in off-Broadway productions.

Her television career kicked off with a role as a witness in “The Verdict Is Yours.” Over the years, she appeared in numerous TV shows, including “Route 66,” “The Fugitive,” “Gunsmoke,” and “The Andy Griffith Show.”

One of her most memorable roles was portraying Lou-Ann Poovie, Gomer’s girlfriend, in “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.”

In addition to her television work, MacRae made appearances in various soap operas, including “General Hospital,” where she played Meg Baldwin from 1969 to 1973.

MacRae’s film credits include “Live in a Goldfish Bowl,” “The Incredible Mr. Limpet,” and “The Conversation,” directed by Frances Ford Coppola.

After retiring from acting, MacRae and her husband, Charles Day Halsey Jr., returned to Fayetteville, where they settled down. She is survived by five stepchildren: Terry, Peter, Hugh, Cate, and Alex.
