A prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has voiced concern over the suggested compulsory National Health Insurance Scheme requirement for foreign visitors to Ghana.

Reportedly, the new policy mandates that foreign nationals entering Ghana must obtain a mandatory health insurance policy costing between $45 and $270 before entry, effective from Monday, July 1, 2024.
However, the steadfast NPP member, Mr. Otchere-Darko, publicly voiced his dissent regarding the government’s decision.
In a post on his X profile on Tuesday, June 18, he wrote, “Oh how? This has to be fake”.

Ghana implemented the compulsory health insurance policy to guarantee that all visitors receive essential healthcare services during their time in the country.

The policy requires that all non-resident visitors entering Ghana must enroll in a program that grants them access to healthcare services free of charge.
It also applies to visitors entering through airports with either a visa or visa-on-arrival, depending on the duration of their stay in Ghana.
The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), introduced the “National Non-resident Visitors Health Insurance” policy in February 2024.
The initiative specifically targets non-residents visiting Ghana for periods of less than six months within any 12-month period.
