In 2021, Kerley became the first athlete to win the Diamond League events over 100, 200, and 400 meters. Before becoming well-known for winning the 400-meter race in the 2017 NCAA championships both indoors and outdoors, American athlete Fred Kerley began his career as a 200-meter runner in high school.

After winning the indoor and outdoor NCAA titles, he didn’t begin competing in the 400m until his first year at college. After winning silver in London in 2017, he earned gold in the 400-meter relay and bronze in the 400-meter at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
