In February 2021, Cordero was traded to the Boston Red Sox as part of a three-team deal. The Red Sox saw Cordero as a player with tremendous upside, and they hoped he could develop into a key contributor to their team.

Cordero signed a split contract with the New York Yankees on March 30, 2023, that would pay him $1 million in the major leagues and $180,000 in the minor leagues.
