St. Frances Cabrini’s life began in northern Italy in 1850. As a young child, Francesca Cabrini was intrigued by stories of missions. She enjoyed to play by a river close to her uncle’s house, loading paper boats with flowers for her “missionaries” to take to China.

The parish priest noted Frances Cabrini’s friendliness, skill, and faith. He told the bishop of Piacenza about the special qualities of the young instructor. The bishop requested Frances to take charge of an orphanage at Codogno in 1874. There, Frances’ organization, tact, vigor, and devotion were desperately needed.

Mother Cabrini visited Chicago in the late fall of 1917 on her way back from a journey to the West Coast, where she contracted malaria. The First World War, which was raging across Europe and inflicting terrible misery on the populace, also concerned her greatly.
She made the decision to host a Christmas party for the kids at Columbus Hospital in December 1917. She had a serious heart attack on December 22 and died shortly after while working with her sisters to prepare for the party.
