Fran Kirby was diagnosed with the rare condition called pericarditis, an illness which causes inflammation to the fluid-filled sac around the heart.

It has been a difficult six months for Kirby but despite the long road to recovery, the forward is feeling positive having gone six weeks without any symptoms.

Kirby had called ill in November 2019 and came close to returning from the game as a result. In April 2022, Kirby revealed on Twitter that she had continued to succumb to an ongoing issue throughout her career and wanted to put her health first.
Emma Hayes, the manager of Chelsea Women, clarified during a press conference that Kirby had been suffering a lot from fatigue yet the cause of this is currently unknown.
