Former Trump aide Peter Navarro has commenced serving his prison sentence, marking a historic moment as the first former White House official to be incarcerated for contempt of Congress.

Navarro reported to a federal prison in Miami to begin his four-month sentence, which stemmed from his refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack.

Prior to surrendering himself, Navarro addressed supporters at a gas station, denouncing the case against him as an “unprecedented assault on the constitutional separation of powers.”

He expressed frustration, predicting that similar legal tactics could be employed against former President Trump in the future.

In his remarks, Navarro vowed to persevere through his incarceration, stating, “God bless you all, see you on the other side.”

His conviction represents a rare instance of accountability within Trump’s inner circle, as Navarro faces consequences for obstructing congressional scrutiny while Trump himself has yet to face criminal charges for various alleged offenses.

Stanley Brand, one of Navarro’s defense attorneys and a former House general counsel, described the conviction as historic and emphasized its significance in empowering lawmakers to compel cooperation in congressional investigations.

Navarro’s imprisonment underscores the enduring repercussions of defying congressional subpoenas and highlights the potential consequences for future White House aides who may face similar scrutiny.
