Former South African rugby player Pedrie Wannenburg was killed when his car was hit by a teen driver fleeing from police outside Houston. Wannenburg was 41 years old at the time.

Wannenburg died on Saturday, April 2022, according to South Africa Rugby, who said he “represented his country with aplomb” during his 20 Test matches with the Springboks from 2002 to 2007.
Wannenburg died after being flown to the hospital on Friday evening, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said his eight-year-old son was also hospitalised with life-threatening injuries. His wife and daughter were also in the vehicle, but it is believed that they were unharmed.

Gonzalez said on Twitter that the 16-year-old driver who hit Wannenburg’s car and two others has been charged with felony murder, reckless aggravated assault-serious bodily injury, and three counts of aggravated assault-bodily injury. The identity of the adolescent has not been revealed. According to Gonzalez, the driver fled after police attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
