Former Premier League star Paul Holmes dead aged 56

Former Premier League footballer Paul Holmes has passed away at the age of 56 after battling cancer.

Holmes, known for his time at Everton, died peacefully on May 8, 2024, leaving behind his wife Kate.

During his stint at Everton from 1993 to 1996, Holmes made 28 appearances for the club. One of his memorable moments was helping Everton secure a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in a Merseyside derby in September 1993, with goals from Mark Ward and Tony Cottee.

His final match for Everton was against Feyenoord in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in October 1995, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Following his time at Everton, Holmes moved to West Bromwich Albion in 1996 before joining Torquay United, where he eventually retired in 2003.

Tributes have flooded social media platforms, with fans expressing their condolences and remembering Holmes’s contributions to the sport.

Holmes came from a footballing family, with his father, Albert Holmes, being a revered figure at Chesterfield, where he played from 1960 to 1976.
