Former Fremantle Dockers and Greater Western Sydney AFL player Cam McCarthy dies at 29

Former AFL player Cam McCarthy, known for his stints with the Fremantle Dockers and Greater Western Sydney, has tragically passed away at the age of 29.

Emergency services were called to Lake Coogee in south Perth on Thursday, May 9, 2024, where McCarthy was found deceased. The police have confirmed that his death is being treated as non-suspicious.

Fremantle Football Club and his former club, South Fremantle, expressed their condolences to McCarthy’s family, highlighting his warm personality and talent on the field.

McCarthy was drafted by GWS in 2013 and made his AFL debut the following year. He played 21 games for the Giants before returning to Western Australia due to homesickness.

He then joined the Fremantle Dockers in 2016 and played 49 games over the next four seasons.

Following his departure from Fremantle in 2020, McCarthy’s contributions to the sport were remembered by both clubs, with the Dockers planning a pre-game tribute and wearing black armbands in his honor.
