Former Nova Scotia MLA, cabinet minister, and esteemed educator Gordon Balser has passed away at the age of 70, as confirmed by Premier Tim Houston.

In a statement released on Thursday, April 11, 2024, Houston conveyed the news of Balser’s recent passing on the same day.
Balser, who was elected to represent Digby-Annapolis in 1998, served as a dedicated teacher and principal before transitioning into politics.
During his tenure as an MLA, Balser held various ministerial positions, including Economic Development, Transportation and Public Works, Energy, and Agriculture and Fisheries.
“Regardless of the portfolio he undertook, Gordon remained unwavering in his dedication to strengthening Nova Scotia,” remarked Premier Houston.

Recognized for his significant contributions, Balser was honored with the Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, as noted on the website of the Governor General of Canada.
Jill Balser, Gordon’s daughter, currently holds the position of Minister of Labour, Skills, and Immigration in Nova Scotia.
“On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Gordon’s wife, Wendy Suzanne Moore, his daughters Jill, Erin, and Anne, and to all those who cherished and respected him,” expressed Premier Houston.
