Former BBC Journalist David Capper Passes Away at 91

Former BBC Journalist David Capper, known for his courageous reporting during the Troubles, has passed away at the age of 91 in March 2024.

Capper, a familiar face on television and radio, provided insightful coverage of some of Northern Ireland’s darkest moments.

As the BBC Ireland Correspondent, he reported on significant events such as Bloody Sunday and Bloody Friday, offering a trusted account of the unfolding tragedies.

Born in Belfast, Capper began his journalistic journey at the Newtownards Chronicle, where he covered his first major news story, the sinking of the Princess Victoria in 1953.

His career took him to Vancouver before returning to Northern Ireland to join the reporting team at the Belfast Telegraph and later, the BBC.

During the Falklands War, Capper served as part of the BBC team in Buenos Aires, showcasing his dedication to delivering accurate and compelling news coverage.

His 26-year tenure at the BBC included pivotal moments in history, culminating in his coverage of the Enniskillen bomb in 1987.

After leaving the BBC, Capper continued to contribute to the media landscape, providing guidance to developing radio stations abroad.

He eventually settled in Donaghadee, where he cherished his childhood memories and pursued his passions for music and narrow gauge steam railways.

Remembered as a journalistic icon, Capper’s legacy lives on through his unwavering commitment to impartial reporting and fearless pursuit of the truth.

Adam Smyth, director of BBC NI, hailed Capper as an eyewitness to history, whose trusted accounts shaped the understanding of The Troubles for generations.

Norman Stockton, a fellow broadcaster, fondly recalled Capper as a beacon of cheerfulness and enthusiasm, praising his pioneering spirit and innate broadcasting talent.

He is survived by his children, Chris, Diarmit and Samantha, and nine grandchildren
