Despite her popularity, Benjamin and her husband appear to have kept their children out of the media spotlight, thus there is no information about them online.
Dame Benjamin was born on September 23, 1949, and arrived in England as a 10-year-old Windrush child in 1960.
She dropped out of school at 16 with the intention of becoming Britain’s first black female bank manager, but instead became an actor, presenter, writer, independent producer, working peer, and an outspoken advocate for the welfare, care, and education of children all over the world.
Benjamin has been in the entertainment industry for 49 years, appearing on stage, film, radio, and television. She rose to prominence after appearing on the classic children’s shows Playschool and PlayAway.

Her broadcasting work has earned her an OBE in 2001, a BAFTA Special Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and the J.M Barrie Lifetime Award in 2012 for her lasting cultural legacy.
She was named a Fellow of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in 2013 and President of the Association of Women Writers and Journalists in 2017.
For ten years, she was Chancellor of the University of Exeter, where she was famous for hugging every student while imploring them to “change the world.”
After she stepped down as Chancellor in 2016, the university erected a statue of her in honor of her contributions to the City of Exeter.
She was the first woman Trinidadian elected to the House of Lords in 2010, and she speaks on children’s, diversity, and media issues.
She recently succeeded in convincing the government to pass legislation requiring commercial broadcasters to supply UK-made television programming.
