The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has terminated Finidi George’s tenure as Super Eagles coach and unveiled intentions to recruit a foreign technical adviser following the team’s disastrous performance in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In a statement issued following an executive committee meeting on Wednesday, June 12, the NFF apologized to Nigerian fans for the Eagles’ “disappointing performance and very low yield” of only three points out of a potential 12 in the initial four qualifiers.

It was announced that the federation had “decided to hire a foreign Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the upcoming weeks” ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which commence in September.

The dramatic decision marks the conclusion of Finidi’s short tenure, which has been marred by disappointing outcomes and scrutiny regarding squad choices.

The Atlanta ’96 Olympic gold medalist was appointed just last month with expectations that he could rejuvenate the three-time African champions.

However, his time in charge has unraveled swiftly, with Nigeria already facing a daunting task to qualify for the 2026 World Cup following losses to Benin and a draw with South Africa in recent matches.

While the NFF statement did not explicitly mention Finidi’s future role, the implication suggests that a demotion is probable as they seek a prominent foreign coach.
