On Friday, September 15, 2023, it was announced that Colombian artist Fernando Botero had passed away. The gifted artist passed away at 91 years old.
Gustavo Pedro, the president of Colombia, called him “the painter of our traditions and defects, the painter of our virtues.”

According to his daughter Lina on Friday, the artist, who resided in Monaco, had pneumonia. With his Abu Ghraib series, Botero gained recognition on a global scale in 2005.

This potent collection, which includes more than 85 paintings and 100 drawings, demonstrated his dedication to “painting out the poison.” Botero decided against selling these pieces and instead gave them to museums. 56 works from this series were donated to the Berkeley Art Museum in 2009.

The second of David Botero and Flora Angulo’s three sons, Fernando Botero, was born in 1932. Tragically, David Botero, Fernando’s father, died of a heart attack when he was just four years old. David was a traveling salesman who worked on horseback. His mother, Flora Angulo, maintained the family despite this tragedy by working as a seamstress. An uncle was very important in Fernando’s life during these formative years.
