Felicity Kenday was born in Olton, Warwickshire, England, in 1946. She is the younger daughter of Laura Liddell and Geoffrey Kendal who is an actor and manager.

Geoffrey joined repertory theatre companies which performed across small English towns. During one such tour, while in Merseyside, he met Laura Liddell, also an actress; subsequently married Gretna Green in 1933.

After appearing with Entertainments National Service Association during the Second World War entertaining troops over overseason, he along with his troupe performed in Hong Kong, Singapore and the backwaters of Malaya and Borneo family arriving in India in 1944.
After early years in Birmingham, Kendal lived in India with her family at the age of seven: her father was an English actor-manager who led his own repertory company on tours of India.
