Veteran Bangladeshi film actor cum ruling Awami League lawmaker for Dhaka-17 Akbar Hossain Farooque passed away on May 15, 2023, after battling tuberculosis.

He was aged 74.

Farooque who had been battling the illness since 2020, died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

He had been in the intensive care unit (ICU) for 4 months before his demise.

Who Was Akbar Hossain Farooque?

Akbar Hossain Farooque was a Bangladeshi actor, film producer, politician, and entrepreneur.

Born on August 18, 1948, Farooque began his acting career in the 1970s, and ended up appearing in over 150 films, and in the next five decades, he became a household name in the Bangladeshi film industry.

As a producer, Farooque owned FP Films, through which he produced over a dozen of films and cofounded the Film Artist Association.

He was the president of Bangobandhu Sangskritik Jot, while he also managed his private business, Farooque Kniting and Dying Manufacturing Company, by the side.

As a politician, late Farooque was an activist, who joined the Bangladesh Awami League politics since 1966, and became a member of Parliament from Dhaka-17 in 2018.

Farooque won a number of awards during his lifetime, including the Bangladesh National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2016. He remains “one of the greatest and influential actors in the history of Bangladeshi cinema.”
