Ewen Jones (Former Townsville MP) obituary – Former Townsville MP Ewen Jones, a well-respected federal Queensland MP and business identity has died at the age of 63. A release from Opposition leader Peter Dutton’s office stated that Mr. Jones passed away in the wee hours of Thursday (July 13, 2023) after a long battle with cancer. He was 63.

Mr. Jones’ daughter Emma confirmed her dad’s death that same morning in a tweet that reads: “Ewen Jones passed away around 5am this morning, surrounded by family. He is at peace now. I am so lucky to have had him as my dad.”

Born on 7 March 1960, Mr. Jones served six years as the federal member for Herbert, a seat encompassing the far north city of Townsville and Magnetic and Palm Islands, after being elected in 2010.

He won the division of Herbert in 2010, achieving a 2.05% swing against the Labor candidate, former Mayor of Townsville, Tony Mooney. Jones was a longtime resident of Townsville, Queensland.

He replaced long-serving Liberal MP Peter Lindsay as the federal member for Herbert in 2010 when Labor under former prime minister Julia Gillard was re-elected but without a majority.

In 2016, he lost his seat by 37 votes to Labor’s Cathy O’Toole, in the election that saw then-Liberal PM Malcolm Turnbull only get narrowly re-elected.

Before entering politics, he worked as an auctioneer from 1990 to 2010 and in finance company sales from 1998 to 2001.

He also worked as a residential real estate consultant for two years until 2010.
