Evelyn de Rothschild Cause of Death

Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, a British financier, died at the age of 91, on November 8, 2022, according to his family.

In a statement, his family said: ‘It is with great sorrow that Lady de Rothschild announces the death of her beloved husband, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, after a short illness.

‘Sir Evelyn passed away peacefully yesterday evening at his home in London with his loved ones by his side. ‘The family appreciates thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.’

Sir Evelyn was the chief executive and chairman of NM Rothschild and Sons Ltd from 1976 to 2003, and he was the chairman of The Economist from 1972 to 1989.

His great-great-great-grandfather established a financial dynasty in the late 18th century, which helped finance the Duke of Wellington’s victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

Sir Evelyn oversaw the growth of his family’s bank’s total assets from £40 million to £4.6 billion. The Queen knighted him in 1989 for services to banking and finance.

Sir Evelyn managed to unite the London branch of his family bank, now known as Rothschild & Co, with its French counterpart, Rothschild & Compagnie Banque, before stepping down from his finance role.
