Ernie Barrett was a basketball player from the United States. Ernie Barrett died on Friday, April 21 2023, at hospice care in Manhattan. He was 93 years old.

Ernie Barrett is survived by his 72-year-old wife, Bonnie, his son, Brad, a grandson, Ryan and his wife, Lauren. His parents and son Duane predeceased him.

He attended Kansas State University and where he played basketball.  Barrett was chosen by the Boston Celtics in the first round (7th overall) of the 1951 NBA Draft. He played 131 games for the Celtics (1953-54, 1955-56) in the National Basketball Association.

Ernie Barrett returned to Kansas State University in 1991 as the department’s director of development for which he served until his retirement in 2007.

Ernie Barrett was inducted into the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990, and the university erected a statue of him in front of Bramlage Coliseum in 1999 to honour his numerous contributions. In 1996, he was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

In 2003, he was named to the school’s 13-man All-Century Basketball Team. After being honoured by the school in 2005, his number 22 jersey now hangs in the rafters of Bramlage Coliseum.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Bramlage Coliseum on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 1 p.m. CT, followed by a reception in the Shamrock Zone. The service and reception are both open to the general public.
