Mays, known for his unwavering dedication to his constituents and his bold advocacy, leaves behind a legacy of service that has deeply impacted the community.

Mays’ death, attributed to natural causes following an illness, was announced by the city of Flint on Saturday evening, prompting an outpouring of condolences and remembrances from across the city.

Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley expressed profound sorrow at Mays’ passing, describing him as a beloved figure whose “bold and courageous service” endeared him to residents of the First Ward and beyond.

Neeley reflected on Mays’ significant presence at City Hall, emphasizing that his absence would be keenly felt. “This is a tremendous loss for our community and a shock to all friends and family,” Neeley said.

In honor of Mays’ memory and his dedicated service to the city, Mayor Neeley ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at Flint City Hall, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated himself to the betterment of his community.

Eric Mays served as the voice of the First Ward on the Flint City Council for over a decade, earning the trust and support of his constituents through multiple successful election campaigns.

His enduring popularity was reflected in the consistently high number of votes he received, underscoring his deep connection with the people he served.

First elected in November 2013, Mays succeeded Anita Brown in representing the city’s northwest side. Throughout his tenure, he held various leadership positions, including council president in 2021 and chairman of the Finance Committee in 2018.

Mays’ commitment to public service extended beyond his role on the council, as evidenced by his unsuccessful mayoral bid in 2022, where he competed against former Flint Mayor Karen Weaver and incumbent Mayor Sheldon Neeley.

As Flint mourns the loss of Councilman Eric Mays, the community remembers him not only as a dedicated public servant but also as a compassionate advocate who tirelessly championed the needs of his constituents.
