This revelation emerged from a 2014 federal court hearing and raised questions about the extent of his cooperation with authorities. According to his lawyer’s statements during the hearing, Tarrio was a “prolific” cooperator who assisted in investigations spanning anabolic steroids, gambling, and human smuggling. He helped identify illegal “grow houses” involved in marijuana cultivation and worked undercover on multiple occasions.

Despite initial denials of working undercover or cooperating with prosecutions, the court transcript contradicted Tarrio’s claims. A former federal prosecutor involved in the case confirmed his cooperation. This revelation about his past as an informant became public in January 2021 when Reuters obtained court records and interviewed individuals connected to the case.

Early Life and Legal Troubles

Before gaining notoriety through the Proud Boys, Tarrio led a tumultuous life. Born and raised Catholic in Little Havana, Miami, he faced legal troubles early on. At the age of 20 in 2004, he was convicted of theft, resulting in community service, three years of probation, and restitution payments. Following his theft conviction, Tarrio briefly managed a poultry farm in North Florida before returning to Miami. He also founded businesses specializing in security equipment installation and GPS tracking services.

In 2012, Tarrio’s legal problems escalated when he was indicted for his involvement in a scheme to rebrand and resell stolen diabetic test strips. However, his cooperation with investigators helped them prosecute numerous individuals involved in various criminal activities. In 2013, he received a 30-month federal prison sentence, serving 16 months, for his role in the diabetic test strips scheme.
