Derek Underwood, widely regarded as England’s greatest spin bowler, passed away at the age of 78 due to complications of dementia on April 15, 2024,

The announcement was made on Monday, April 15, 2024 afternoon by Kent County Cricket Club, where Underwood had dedicated his entire 24-year first-class career, amassing over 900 appearances.
Richard Thompson, chair of the England and Wales Cricket Board, paid tribute to Underwood, describing him as “one of the finest spin bowlers this country has ever produced.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Underwood achieved remarkable feats, becoming the most prolific spinner to represent England in history.
He claimed 297 wickets at an average of 25.8 from 86 Tests between 1966 and 1982, ranking sixth in the country’s all-time charts.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings retrospectively show that Underwood was the No. 1 Test bowler in the world for a four-year period starting in 1969.
Underwood’s contributions to cricket were recognized with an MBE for services to the sport in 1981. He later served as president of Kent in 2006 and the Marylebone Cricket Club in 2009
. In the same year, he was inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame. In recent years, he withdrew from public life after being diagnosed with dementia.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn, and two daughters.
