Dickinson was born into a prominent family in Amherst, Massachusetts, with strong ties to the community.  Dickinson appears to have spent much of her life alone, according to evidence. She developed a penchant for white clothing and was known for her aversion to greeting guests or, later in life, even leaving her bedroom.

What happened to Emily in Dickinson?

As the light changed and the seasons passed, Emily never left her room in Dickinson, sitting, writing, and watering her plants. She eventually found herself on a beach, where the mermaids (from her poem) summon her. “Wait for me, I’m on my way,” she said as she rowed towards her fate or happiness.

What happened after Emily Dickinson died?

Lavinia, Emily’s sister, discovered hundreds of Emily’s poems shortly after her death and decided that the poetry had to be published.
