Emanuel Awuley Quaye, Legendary Ghanaian footballer passes away

The Ghanaian football fraternity is in mourning following the passing of former Ghana captain, Emanuel Awuley Quaye, affectionately known as Awulley Senior Quaye.

The iconic defender breathed his last on Monday, March 25, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished in the annals of Ghanaian football.

Quaye’s illustrious career saw him rise to prominence as a formidable force on the football pitch. His leadership and skill were instrumental in guiding the Ghana national team to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978.

Throughout his career, Quaye’s contributions to Ghanaian football were unparalleled. His name became synonymous with excellence and dedication, as he inspired generations of footballers with his remarkable talent and unwavering commitment to the sport.

In recognition of his significant achievements, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) honored Quaye during their 47th awards ceremony in 2023. The tribute paid homage to his remarkable career and the profound impact he had on the sport in Ghana.

Reflecting on his playing days, Quaye expressed disappointment over unfulfilled promises made to him and his fellow players following their historic triumph in the African Cup of Nations.

Beyond the national team, Quaye was a legendary figure for Ghanaian club Great Olympics, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s domestic successes during the 1970s.

In addition to his contributions to Ghanaian football, Quaye was also a proud father to former Ghana U-17 star, Awuley Quaye Jnr, who achieved fame by winning the U-17 World Cup in 1997, as well as Lawrence Awuley Quaye.
