Elaine Lan Chao (born March 26, 1953) is a businesswoman and former government figure from the United States.

She served as the 18th United States Secretary of Transportation in the Trump administration from 2017 to 2021, and as the 24th United States Secretary of Labor in the George W. Bush administration from 2001 to 2009. She is a Republican.
Chao was the first Asian American woman to serve in the White House Cabinet.
Chao, who was born in Taiwan, relocated to the United States when she was eight years old.
Her father formed the Foremost Group, which grew into a significant shipping company.
Chao grew up on Long Island, New York, and then attended Mount Holyoke College and Harvard Business School.

She is the eldest of six daughters of Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, a historian, and James S. C. Chao.

Elaine Chao’s sisters are; Angela Chao, Grace Chao, Christine Chao, May Chao, and Jeanette Chao.
May Chao received her B.A. from Wellesley College and her M.B.A. from Harvard University.
According to The New York Times, she married Jeffrey Hwang, vice president of Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, in 1986.
Angela Chao currently serves on the Harvard Business School’s Board of Dean’s Advisors, as well as on the Council on Foreign Relations.
Sadly, Jeanette Chao, the second-oldest Chao daughter after Elaine, died in 2008, according to Lancaster Online.
In order to remember Ruth Chao, who died of cancer in 2007, the Chao family chose to donate $40 million to Harvard Business School in 2012.
