Edward Crosby Ned Johnson III was an American billionaire investor and businessman who, along with their daughter, Abigail Johnson, owned and ran Fidelity Investments and Fidelity International until his death. He was born on June 29, 1930.

Johnson was the first to begin the practice of permitting check writing on money funds. He was also the first to sell discount brokerage services to banks, insurance companies and consumers.

Johnson was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a trustee of the Beth Israel Hospital and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and a member of the Boston Society of Security Analysts.

Edward C. “Ned” Johnson III died on March 23 at his home in Wellington, Fla at age 91. Fidelity confirmed the death but did not provide a cause

Edward C. “Ned” Johnson III had two daughters, Abigail and Elizabeth L. Johnson and a son, Edward Johnson IV. His daughter Abigail took over the role of CEO of Fidelity Investments and Chairman of Fidelity International in 2014.

His only daughter, Elizabeth L. Johnson in 2012, has an estimated net worth of $2.5 billion.

His son Edward Johnson IV is the president of family owed Pembroke Real Estate.
