Despite his success in cricket and football, Hearn attended Brentwood School in Essex but was unable to enroll in the sixth form due to subpar GCSE scores. He continued his schooling by studying media studies, physical education, and business studies at Havering Sixth Form College.

He was inspired to study by his father, who gave him the incentive of £1,000 if he earned a C or better in his A-level subjects, which he did.

After completing his degree, Hearn began working for a West End sports management firm. In order to build Matchroom Boxing, he continued to advertise online poker there and was successful in getting heavyweight champion David Haye to face Audley Harrison.
