The Electoral Commission (EC) has reported the registration of 251,149 new voters during the six-day registration period, which concluded on Sunday, May 12, 2024. This equates to an average of 45,000 new registrations daily.

Of the total number of registered voters, 135,898 (54.11 per cent) are females, while 115,251 (45.89 per cent) are males. Additionally, the EC registered 400 persons with disabilities across the country.
In terms of regional distribution, the Greater Accra region accounted for 33,899 voters (13.5 per cent), followed by other regions such as Ashanti with 44,232 voters (17.6 per cent), and Central with 27,984 voters (11.1 per cent).
First-time voters, aged between 18 and 21, constituted the majority of registered voters, totaling 221,066 individuals within the first six days of the registration exercise.

During the initial five days, 98,926 applicants (39.39 per cent) utilized the Ghana Card as their identification document, while 622 applicants (0.25 per cent) used the Passport. The guarantor system was employed by 151,601 applicants (60.36 per cent).
Challenges were noted during the registration process, with a total of 2,935 cases reported. The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of challenged cases, with 524 instances.
Dr Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, expressed concern over the prevalent use of the guarantor system, which can potentially facilitate the registration of unqualified individuals, including minors and foreigners.
He emphasized the EC’s commitment to transitioning to the Ghana Card as the primary identification document in future registration exercises.
The EC appealed to political parties to refrain from resorting to violence to challenge the eligibility of applicants and urged parents to ensure that children below 18 years of age did not attempt to register.
