Born Samille Diane Friesen on January 4, 1937, in Tacoma, Washington, she is the daughter of Claire (née Portnoy), a housewife, and Ben Friesen, a life insurance salesman.

Dyan’s upbringing reflects the amalgamation of different faiths. Her Ashkenazi Jewish mother, an immigrant from Ukraine, practiced the Jewish faith, while her father, of Canadian Mennonite ancestry, adhered to the Anabaptist tradition. This unique blend of cultural influences shaped Dyan’s early life and contributed to the rich tapestry of her identity.

Growing up in such a diverse environment, Dyan developed a strong connection to her roots. Her younger brother, David Friesen, further enriched the family’s cultural landscape with his pursuits as a jazz musician.
