Born Samille Diane Friesen on January 4, 1937, in Tacoma, Washington, she is the daughter of Claire (née Portnoy), a housewife, and Ben Friesen, a life insurance salesman.

Dyan’s upbringing reflects the amalgamation of different faiths. Her Ashkenazi Jewish mother, an immigrant from Ukraine, practiced the Jewish faith, while her father, of Canadian Mennonite ancestry, adhered to the Anabaptist tradition.
