Born in Dorset, England, James spent his formative years there as an only child, raised primarily by his mother and grandparents. His father had abandoned his mother before he was born, leaving Fiona to be both mother and father to young Duncan.

The family had a strong connection to their Catholic faith, and James was brought up as a “strict Catholic.” This upbringing instilled values of resilience and determination, which have undoubtedly shaped his remarkable career.

Education was a significant part of his early life. He attended several schools, including Dumpton School in Wimborne, where his grandfather worked as a music teacher, and later, Milldown School in Blandford Forum. He furthered his education at Corfe Hills School in Broadstone and Sidmouth College in East Devon.

His involvement with the Sidmouth Youth Theatre allowed him to explore his passion for the performing arts, setting the stage for a career that would later include singing, acting, and presenting.
