Dow Finsterwald Cause of Death

Finsterwald, a PGA Tour 12-time winner, died Friday, November 4, 2022 night at his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was 93. Dow Finsterwald Jr., his son, said his father died peacefully in his sleep.

“He did all he could for the game,” said his son, the head professional at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. “He enjoyed his friends and they always remembered. He loved the rules and he cared about the game. He had a wonderful life and he felt like for sure it was complete.”

Finsterwald won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average in 1957 and was named PGA Player of the Year in 1958. He was also a member of four Ryder Cup teams, going 9-3-1. He captained the United States team in 1977, which included Ryder Cup rookies such as Tom Watson and Lanny Wadkins.

Finsterwald’s most recent victory came at the 500 Festival Open Invitational in Indianapolis. He also made 72 consecutive cuts, a remarkable feat for his era because it was measured not on a 36-hole cut but on finishing among the top 25 or so finishers who received prize money.

Finsterwald became The Broadmoor’s head pro in 1963 and held the position for 28 years.
