Douglas Lenat, founder and CEO of Austin, Texas-based Cycorp, Inc., was a well-known artificial intelligence researcher who lived from 1950 to 2023. In 1976, Lenat received the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award, which is given every two years, for developing the machine learning program AM.

With his AM and Eurisko programs, he has worked on (symbolic, rather than statistical) machine learning, knowledge representation, the “cognitive economy”, blackboard systems, and what he coined in 1984 “ontological engineering” (with his Cyc program at MCC and, since 1994, at Cycorp).

Additionally, he has contributed to various projects for the US government, military, intelligence, and scientific institutions as well as military simulations. He wrote a critique of traditional random-mutation Darwinism in 1980.
