Donald Arvid Nelson is a former professional basketball player and head coach from the United States. Nelson has the second-most regular-season wins of any NBA coach in history, with 1,335. He previously coached the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, and Golden State Warriors. Nelson won five NBA titles with the Boston Celtics after an All-American career at the University of Iowa, and his number 19 was retired by the team in 1978.

In 1983 and 1985, he was voted NBA Coach of the Year. Nelson is the franchise’s all-time winningest coach. Nelson went on to coach in Golden State, New York, and Dallas before retiring in 2010 with a regular-season record of 1,335-1,063 and a postseason record of 75-91.

Nelson passed Lenny Wilkens for first place on the all-time NBA wins record on April 7, 2010, with his 1,333rd career victory. His coaching record was 1,335–1,063 all-time (.557). In 2012, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
