Don McKenney  was a forward and coach in Canadian ice hockey. Don McKenney and his wife Margaret Gendron were parents of three children.

They had two daughters Valerie and Deborah, as well as son Scot. All their children are  Northeastern University graduates. Their son Scot played for the Huskies men’s hockey team in the early 1980s.

Don McKenney died in Ontario on December 18, 2022, at the age of 88. His cause of death was not given.

McKenney made his Bruins debut in 1954 and went on to tie Leo Labine for the team lead in scoring that season with 42 points (22 goals, 20 assists), while finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting.

McKenney had 237 goals, 345 assists, and 582 points in 798 games over 13 NHL seasons.

Following his playing career, McKenney joined Flaman’s staff as an assistant coach for the Northeastern University men’s hockey team, where he remained for nearly two decades before being promoted to head coach in 1989-91.

In 1999, McKenney was inducted into the Northeastern Hall of Fame. He went on to work as a scout for the Colorado Avalanche.
