Does SIM-free mean unlocked Carphone Warehouse? – The majority of the phones sold by Carphone Warehouse are not network-locked, including practically all of its SIM-free phones. The consequence is that you can insert any UK SIM card into your phone and use it with whichever UK network you like.

Sir Charles Dunstone and Julian Brownlie co-founded Carphone Warehouse Limited in 1989, investing £6,000 of their money.

Guy Johnson of NEC UK joined the company as the second partner, later becoming the Logistics and Distribution director.

Dunstone hired his high school classmate David Ross, a certified accountant, as Chief Operating Officer in 1990.

The company stated in March 2020 that it would close all 531 standalone UK locations the following month, with sales operations continuing within co-located “shops within shops” at Currys PC World stores and online.

This measure was supposed to be the result of a shifting mobile market.

The company announced on April 21, 2021, that the entire business in Ireland, including all 69 standalone stores in Ireland, 12 locations within other stores, and the carphonewarehouse.ie website would be shut down immediately, resulting in the loss of 486 jobs.
